Latest from Scottish Cycling, a chance for all members to have their say.

Dear Club,

We’d like to hear your views!  Can you please send this request round your club membership to help us Develop a Nation of Cyclists.  We’re reviewing the governance, processes, and structures of how we facilitate the ongoing development of our sport.

Working closely with our membership is crucial to this, and throughout the summer of 2020 we have worked closely with Commissions, governance groups, key stakeholders and contacts to review what we do.  This was the first step in understanding how we might move forward.

Further to this, we are inviting all members to participate in a consultation to review the Scottish Cycling Commissions and Regional Development Groups. Within the survey, respondents will have the option to respond to either one, or both areas.

This is a fundamental part of a process to gather evidence for the consultation. The evidence will be used to improve how we manage the sport and offer more dedicated and targeted support across all cycling disciplines and regions.

We would love to hear your views!  Please click on the link below to contribute via our google form >

Many thanks,

Latest update from Scottish Cycling attached. No major changes to us, but there are some for people in any of the 5 health board areas where lockdown measures are tighter. Nobody should travel to any of the 5 restricted health board areas for events and nobody from those areas should travel to any other area for events / rides.

Dundee Wheelers face coverings are now available...we have one for each member and a limited ( 20 to be exact ) extra ones. Each member will receive one for free...if you want a 2nd face covering, please bring £5 to help cover the cost. As there are only 20 extras, it will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

Gillian & Niall Elliott will be at Millenium Hall and Baldovie this Saturday (3rd) to distribute to members. If you can't make it, message Niall or Gillian and we can work out pick up in the Ferry.

Fabric face covering which is washable at 60c. Reminder these are not "medical grade" so only for use where face coverings are needed in enclosed spaces (eg: cafes, shops etc) or outside if you want. Those involved in healthcare or personal care should always be using the type 2 FRSM masks for clinical contacts (or where instructed the type 3 if face-fitted).

Thaks to Niall and Gillian for organising this.

BRAW Saturday Ride (Beginners and Rehab)
Bought a new bike during lockdown? Been cycling by yourself but keen to try group riding? Joining a cycling club is a great way to have fun, meet like-minded friends, improve your fitness and cycling skills and cycle further and faster than you have before.

Join us on Saturday morning, at the Birkhill Millenium hall at 9.30 and the ride leader will welcome you and explain ride protocol and a few basics.

We will plan to cycle approximately 30 miles at a steady pace with a cafe stop and we will all stay together. You are welcome to come to 3 introductory rides to see if club cycling is for you and then join the club after that for a bargain at only £15 per annum. All existing club members very welcome too if you would like a steadier paced ride than the main club run.

Please note these runs are for those wanting to "step up" or return to Club riding, it is expected you already have a level of fitness and are comfortable riding around 14mph average for 20+ miles.

Please bear in mind current COVID restrictions and do not attend if you have a fever, new continuous cough, loss of taste or smell, awaiting a COVID test result, have been asked to isolate for any reason or returned from a non air bridge country in the last 14 days. You will be asked to provide your name and contact details for test and protect purposes. Please bring a mask for the cafe stop.

Hope to see some new faces soon. It would be really helpful for planning if you can let us know if you plan to attend (email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  or if you have any questions).

Club members, please share widely and tell your friends!

As we return to club activities it is essential that everyone knows how we keep safe and help with the NHS Scotland Test & Protect system.

The club's Covid Coordinator is Graeme Carruthers, Secretary (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

The Covid Coordinator is responsible for implementation of mitigation risks, keeping up to date with guidance and how it impacts the club and is the main point of contact between the club and Scottish Cycling.

We MUST ensure that an accurate register is taken of all club activities, including Club Runs. This must include a minimum of date of session, name and phone number of participants. It must also include the name of the Ride Leaders who were in contact with the group activity.  The register must be made available to the Covid Coordinator (Graeme C).

If anyone develops symptoms they can direct NHS Scotland Test & Protect to the Covid Coordinator.

If someone develops symptoms, they must self isolate and request a test.

It is not the responsibility of the Covid Coordinator or the club to let members know if someone at the club tests positive for Covid, this will be undertaken by the NHS Test & Protect Team. The club will however pass on contact details of all participants exposed to a positive case if asked to by NHS Scotland Track & Trace.

If you have any questions or concerns please get in touch with Graeme.

Some more steps back to "normal" were announced by Scottish Cycling:

I am pleased to confirm that following the welcome announcements from the First Minister on Thursday 20th August, we have now been able to publish updated guidance on cycling activity.

In summary:

  • The requirement for physical distancing is suspended for all activity, and for all ages, from 24 August 2020 for the duration of the activity. Physical distancing of 2m should be maintained before and after activity for all people aged 12 and over.
  • Coaches & Leaders can coach / lead adult groups of no more 30, from an unlimited number of households. See Guidance for Coaching and Leading.
  • Group cycling activity, training, or fitness, including club rides, for adults can take place in groups of no more than 30, from an unlimited number of households, providing a Covid Coordinator has been appointed for the activity. See Guidance for Clubs and Activity and Guidance for Covid Coordinators.

Significantly, the guidance on group sizes for sport and physical activity now differs markedly from the rest of society (where 15 from 5 households outdoors remains the case).

This is a welcome move, which will permit a much wider return to club activity, particularly for adults, than has been possible previously.

The Covid-19 Coordinator role has now become compulsory for all clubs (previously this was just for youth clubs and encouraged for others).

Please find attached an updated overview of the suspension of British/Scottish Cycling sanctioned activities.

While many of you have been enjoying the opportunity to ride recreationally, we appreciate that the cycling community is looking for direction and certainty on when club, group and competitive activity can resume.

The British Cycling position has been agreed with Scottish Cycling and Welsh Cycling, but we recognise that devolved government guidance may dictate that adjustments are required, including the dates we are working towards.

To support the Scottish Cycling clubs, event organisers and riders, the following guidance will further explain the British Cycling extension to the suspension of activity, in Scotland.
